Drink spiking

Drink spiking is when someone adds something in your drink without you knowing. Usually this is alcohol, but it can be another drug. When this happens, you become affected by the alcohol or the drug unexpectedly.

Someone might spike your drink to make it easier to sexually assault you.

Common substances that may be put into your drink include:

  • Ecstasy
  • Rohypnol
  • Gamma Hydroxyl Butyrate (GHB)
  • Ketamine
  • Sleeping pills and antihistamines.

These substances might have no taste, colour or smell. This makes it difficult to know they are in your drink.

They can also be fast-acting. They can cause:

  • Lack of coordination
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Blackouts and loss of memory.

Adding alcohol or drugs to a person’s drink without their knowledge is a crime and is punishable by law.
