Self Harm
Self harm is when people hurt themselves deliberately. They might cut themselves, bite themselves, burn themselves etc. They usually do these things in secret to help ‘cope’ with negative feelings and difficult situations.
People who hurt themselves have usually tried other ways to deal with their emotions before they decide to self harm. For some people, they feel relief after they have harmed themselves.
This feeling of relief does not last and self harm usually creates long term problems. Some of these can’t be treated – such as the scars left by cutting or burning which may need plastic surgery.
If you or someone you know is self harming, it’s important to get help in order to work out positive ways to express pain.
